Materials + Care
Body: Smooth cotton canvas
Handles + Details: Nappa leather
Hardware: Brass or brushed nickel
Care: For minor marks and stains on canvas, spot clean using a soft, white cloth dampened with cold water and mild soap. After spot cleaning, allow the bag to air dry in the shade.
Clean leather occasionally using a soft, colorfast cloth and a neutral cleaner made for leather. Condition once or twice a year to restore natural oils and moisture. Do not machine wash or dry clean.

Patented Halter Hardware
The now-iconic halter squares evolved during a late night spent in a barn aisle cleaning and removing brass hardware from old turnout halters. Our founder was inspired by their beautiful forms and durability, complete with the patina of teethmarks from the games of halter tag that horses play. The resulting tote designs included halter squares and bold leather straps encircling the bag—at once authentic, functional, and beautiful.

Very disappointed that I wrote a mediocre review on this bag and Oughton refused to post it. Summary: the size and design of the bag are perfect for work. Downside, the quality is not near as nice as my previous Oughton bag. Leather is soft and supple, but scratches and feels cheap. Definitely not worth purchasing full price. Metal hardware also has a cheap patina to it.

As to your feedback regarding the materials used, our Product Development Team worked with the Founder of Oughton during the relaunch of the brand. Daphne shared with us that many customers gave her feedback that her bags were too big and heavy. So when our Team was looking at sourcing materials they chose a lighter weight canvas and a leather that is not as thick. All of this was with the intention to make the bags lighter in weight, not in quality.

The size and design of the bag are perfect. It It holds everything that I need for the day and I love that the top zips closed. The cotton canvas material is nice, and I am interested to see if dog hair sticks to it. Unfortunately, I feel that the quality is much lower than the original Oughton bags. The bag doesn’t hold it shape on its own, the leather on the bottom is extremely thin and the straps just feel cheap. My older Oughton bag has aged like fine wine- I feel like the handles could tear at any time on this one… I also miss the customization that the company used to offer and when asked if a saddle or bridle plate would fit best, they just responded that it wasn’t available- which I knew. It would also be hard to add a name plate because the hardware is a dirty brown/bronze color- not a natural patina look. Silver nor brass would match. I will look into the warranty before I decide to keep or send back. Definitely would not pay the full price. I just want the old bags back!
